The Force of Nature..

In today’s hectic world, it’s easy to become disconnected with nature. This is important as we observe greater rates of burn out across the western world. One of our BUA Lifestyle principles, Nature Exposure promotes daily experiences into untouched environments. This could involve a stroll along the beach, a hike through the bush, or surf upon the waves.

Research conducted in Japan highlights the importance of spending time outdoors and has even led to legislative changes around worker’s leave and national holidays based on moving in nature. A practice known as shinrin-yoku or forest bathing has reduced cortisol levels and blood pressure while enhancing overall well-being. In one study, participants who spent time in a forest environment exhibited significantly lower stress markers compared to those in urban areas.

Beyond physical health, nature also has a profound impact on mental well-being. Nature exposure has been linked to improved mood, increased attention span, and a reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression. Whether it’s the calming sound of waves on a beach or the peaceful solitude of the mountains, the natural world helps us feel more grounded.

Moreover, daily experiences in nature foster a deeper connection to the land. Spending time outdoors increases our awareness of the environment and encourages a sense of stewardship. Whether you’re wandering along a beach, trekking through the forest, or standing atop a mountain, prioritise this time to ensure you are thriving!

Action

  1. Hit multiple birds with one stone. Example, take a run on the beach with a friend = A good hit of vitamin D, improved cardiovascular health, social engagement while enjoying the benefits of being immersed in nature.

  2. Blueprint the next Generation. Regularly take the kids on a hike or for a surf to plant those habits early on and ensure they become a lifestyle.

  3. Small doses add up. If you are short for time, breaking up the day with a 15-minute walk in the park might be just what you need to stretch out and rejuvenate!
