Do you know being generous can make you feel happier?
We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give. (Winston Churchill)
Are you looking for a way to boost your happiness and feel good about yourself?
Look no further than the power of generosity! Yes, you heard it right. Being generous can bring immense joy and satisfaction to our lives and make us feel happier in the long run.
Why does being generous make us happier?
IT BOOSTS FEEL-GOOD CHEMICALS
When we give, our brain releases feel-good chemicals like dopamine and oxytocin, which make us feel happy and content. It's like a natural high that we get from making others happy.
IT GIVES A SENSE OF MEANING AND PURPOSE
It's a way to make a difference in the world and feel like we are contributing to something greater than ourselves.
REDUCES STRESS AND ANXIETY
Generosity can also reduce stress and anxiety. When we focus on others and their needs, it takes the focus off our own problems and can help us to feel more relaxed and at peace.
IINCREASES SELF-ESTEEM
When we give, we feel good about ourselves and our actions. This can increase our self-esteem and confidence, making us feel better about who we are and what we have to offer the world.
5 ways to give to people you know & boost your happiness:
1. Nurture your loved ones
Start with your family and close friends. Hand out sincere compliments. Celebrate their victories. Surprise them by cooking their favourite dinner or taking out the garbage even when it is someone else’s turn.
2. Reach out to your neighbours
Keep an eye out for newcomers. Invite them over for coffee and cake. Bring over a batch of homemade cookies or fresh herbs from your garden.
3. Support local charities
Research organisations that are doing good work in your own neighbourhood. Visit a local animal shelter or after school program. Ask them what resources they need most.
4. Practice random acts of kindness
Leave a generous tip at your local cafe. Pay for a coffee for a stranger. Let someone with fewer items get ahead of you in line at the supermarket.
5. Write thank you letters
We all like to receive recognition. Present a heartfelt message to anyone who does something nice for you.
3 ways you can do good deeds with others:
1. Volunteer as a group
Bring your family and friends along for community service work. Have a look online for community work going on in your local area you can get involved with. You get involved in volunteering with Buddy Up through our purposeful volunteering events!
2. Travel to new places
Incorporate meaningful work or volunteering into your holidays. Extend your network and pick up new skills too!
3. Coordinate a workplace activity
Ask for suggestions about what causes your colleagues want to support. Organisze a fundraiser where people can relax and mingle like a group morning tea, quiz night or talent contest.
By incorporating acts of kindness and generosity into our daily routine, we can experience the joy of giving and create a more positive, fulfilling life for ourselves and others. So, go ahead and spread some kindness and generosity today!
